Tohoku University is proud to announce yet another centennial milestone.

The Institute of Materials Research turns 100 next month and to mark the occasion, an international conference called "Summit of Materials Research," will be held May 18 - 20. It is free and open to all, but registration is required.

The IMR was established in 1916 by Professor Kotaro Honda, who was best known for his work with KS Steel and the invention of the first artificial permanent magnet. It was the first of six institutes set up at Tohoku University and the oldest of all research institutes established by a public university in Japan.

Over the years, IMR has conducted pioneering research in areas such as magnetism, superconductivity, optical properties and microstructure analyses for materials. Its innovation has greatly contributed to academia in Japan and it continues to support and encourage young, talented researchers in the material science community.

As the IMR looks ahead to the next 100 years, it has opened up new genres in terms of new materials, material analyses and analysis technologies. It is also stepping up to the challenges of the 21st century, including finding solutions to the growing number of environmental problems.

Come and celebrate IMR's long and illustrious history with us! For more information on the summit, click on the links below for the programme and online registration form.
