National Seven Universities Begin Summer Athletic Games

Japan's former imperial universities, now known as the National Seven Universities have begun their annual summer athletic games.

The member universities include: Hokkaido University, Tohoku University, the University of Tokyo, Nagoya University, Kyoto University, Osaka University and Kyushu University.

This year, the games hosted by Tohoku University literally kicked off on June 6 with equestrian events. In total there are 43 official game categories.

Tohoku University currently holds strong in second place, a mere three points behind the University of Tokyo.

If successful in winning the entire competition, it will be Tohoku University's third consecutive win since 2013.
