The Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences visits Tohoku University

On July 9, the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Gao Xiang, visited Tohoku University and renewed the academic exchange agreement between the two institutions.

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is one of the leading academic institutions in China for the humanities and social sciences. Tohoku University first concluded an academic exchange agreement with the Academy in 2008, renewing in 2014 and again on this visit.

Prior to the signing session, Vice President Gao spoke of the cultural ties between Japan and China with Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi. He made note of the fact that people in both countries are familiar with each other's literature and spoke about his own experience reading Japanese books on the history of Chinese thought. Vice President Yamaguchi, in turn, mentioned how much he had enjoyed reading the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms."

Vice President Gao recited a quote from Lu Xun's book, "My Old Home" to reflect the exchanges carried out between the two institutions since 2008. Lu states that roads did not exist on earth until people walked upon it. With this in mind, Vice President Gao expressed his desire for further development of the existing cooperative relationship and proposed research exchanges in comparative studies between Japanese and Chinese literature.

Following the meeting, Vice President Gao and his party visited the Tohoku University Archives, the Lu Xun Lecture Hall, and the Main Library on Kawauchi Campus. They also met with Professor Yasushi Kawai of the Graduate School of Arts and Letters.
