Tohoku University held its autumn 2019 commencement ceremony at Kawauchi Hagi Hall on September 25.

The event, attended by family and friends, as well as university faculty and staff, celebrated the graduation of 725 students, two-thirds of whom had come from abroad,

Speaking in both Japanese and English, President Hideo Ohno congratulated the students and said that their Tohoku University education will hold them in good stead as they begin the next chapter of their lives.

As an example, he pointed to the rapidly changing environment and the increasing need to address Sustainable Development Goals and the appropriate treatment of disruptive technology.

"Our university's members are involved in many important efforts to advance medical care, improve digital technology and make our communities a better space," he said. "These actions are greatly impacting society on a global scale."

Finally he urged all students to stay in touch through the university's global alumni network. "Our doors are always open, and we are all here as family, to help in case you feel the need to come home. You are always welcome and you will always be appreciated."

Following the ceremony, several international students shared their best memories of their time at Tohoku University, from their research achievements, to the friends they made.

The Public Relations Department joins the president and the entire university in saying congratulations and good luck to the graduating class.
