Research group led by Takahashi discovered the oceanic sediments deposited 250 million years ago in the Northern Kitakami Mountains. In the sediments, they identified records of the mass extinction event at the end of the Permian period. This geological succession has been preserved under the greatest conditions among national and international reports on Permian-Triassic in ocean abyssopelagic zone, and the findings is significant as a fundamental source for clarifying the biggest mystery in history of life on the Earth. This report has been published in international journal in January 2009.
