The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patents with chronic heart failure is more than twice higher than in normal population in Japan

The nationwide multi-center research group led by Professor Shimokawa (Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine) has examined for the first time the actual prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with chronic heart failure in Japan. As a result, they have found that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with chronic heart failure is 38%, which is more than twice higher than in normal population in Japan. This research also indicates the importance of metabolic syndrome in the treatment and prevention of chronic heart failure, in addition to hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes, emphasizing the importance of immediate measures for the disorder. This research has been conducted as a "Comprehensive Research Project on Lifestyle Disease associated with Cardiovascular Disease (Study fields in myocardial infarction and stroke) in 2006-2008".
