President of Tohoku University, Akihisa Inoue, Ph.D. was awarded James C. McGroddy Prize

President of Tohoku University, Akihisa Inoue, Ph.D. shares James C. McGroddy Prize with Professor William L. Johnson at California Institute of Technology (CIT) in 2009. This prize is awarded to researchers for their outstanding achievement in material physics. The season to be awarded is development of manufacture method for production of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) by gradual cooling. President Inoue deigned alloy by his own theory, and showed production of amorphous bulk metallic glasses that were stronger and more flexible than general metals by gradually cooling this alloy. This result is expected to be practically used in a wide variety of fields, such as precision machinery components, projection materials, sporting goods, and electromagnetic components. The award ceremony was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 16, 2009, and a diploma was given. Many Nobel Prize winners were awarded James C. McGroddy Prize that was established in 1975. Among Japanese winners, Reona Ezaki, winning of the Nobel Prize in physics, and Professor Sumio Iizima at Meijyo University who graduated from Tohoku University, and discovered carbon nanotube (CNT) were awarded to James C. McGroddy Prize in 1985 and in 2002, respectively.
