Professor Terunobu Miyazaki at WPI Advanced Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku niversity was awarded to 2009 Oliver E. Buckley prize. This prize is awarded to researchers for their outstanding theoretical or experimental contributions to condensed matter physics.
The reason to be awarded is pioneering researches of tunnel Magneto-Resistance Effect, and application of these researches to the spintronics field. Professor Miyazaki shares the prize with three professors; Prof. R. Meservey, Prof. J. Moodera, and Prof. P. Tedrow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Oliver E. Buckley prize was established in 1952, and named in memory of Oliver E. Buckley who was a former president of Bell Labs. This prize is presented every year. Many Nobel Prize winners were awarded to Oliver E. Buckley prize, such as William Bradford Shockley (semiconductor, 1953), John Bardeen (1954), Ivar Giaever (tunnel effect, 1973).
The award ceremony was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 16, 2009 with a large attendance of researchers and their families. Cherry A. Murray, President of the American Physical Society, presented each diploma to 25 winners.
