Establishment of an efficient and reliable melting treatment method for asbestos wastes - Preparation of a general operation manual for melting furnace-

KASAI Laboratory at Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University has prepared a general operation manual for melting furnaces to treat high-efficiently and safely asbestos wastes. The research group consists of KASAI Laboratory (Professor Eiki Kasai), Institute of Mogami Environmental Chemistry in Shinjyo (President Hiroshi Goto), and Mogami Clean Center in Mogami, Yamagata (Director Yoshiharu Abe). This technology helps the melting furnace operators to work efficiently without high performance analyzers and expert knowledge. This research and development has been carried out through the scientific research program of the Ministry of the Environment Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research from 2005 to 2008. The research group made a draft manual based on the results from fundamental experiments at university laboratory, used a melting furnace for incineration ash at Mogami Clean Center to verify its validity, and adjusted the details. The group has submitted the final report to the Ministry of the Environment in May, and will present the research results at 19th Symposium on Environmental Engineering hosted by The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineering (JSME) in Naha, Okinawa through July 9 to 11.
