Information about measure for influenza A(H1N1) Updated on 2009.7.10

1 About cancellation of classes

The university has decided not to close all classes but to review countermeasures below and take individually appropriate action when patients with onset of Influenza A (H1N1) are detected on campus or in Sendai city, and Sendai City or Miyagi Prefecture request the university to cancel classes.

1) According to a degree of severity of the infected patients, the university will cancel classes regionally as the following: 1. Patient Detected Campus (Katahira, Kawauchi, Aobayama, Seiryo, and Amamiya Campus), 2. Patient Detected Departments, 3. Patient Detected Classes. Off-campus classes will be treated in the same manner.

2) The university will prohibit group activities including seminars and conferences hosted by or with participation by students in patient detected areas except above classes.

3) The university will prohibit all activities outside a curriculum including games with other universities or schools.

4) The university will provide necessary services and conduct researches at each laboratory done by a small number of people in patient detected areas.

5) About the academic conferences under graduates and graduate students in the areas infected patients are detected participate, students will be required to follow the instruction given by the conference chair. If participating in it, students will be recommended to act with keeping in mind that the prevention of infection and the spread.

6) Group activities such as lectures held in areas where the infected patients are detected will be canceled and/or deferred. In addition, when the activity is not organized by Tohoku University, the university will request the cancellation and/or defer of the activity to the organizer.

7) The university will require the student cafeterias and the staff cafeterias in the infected patient detected area to refrain voluntarily from opening for the certain period of time.

8) In the immediate future, students and staff of the university will be strictly encouraged to refrain from going out except emergency, and carry out the preventive measure by referring to Cough Etiquette for the New Influenza A (H1N1) Infection, how to wash your hands properly, and how to wear and take off a flu mask properly.

9) In accordance with the spread of infection and requirements from the national government and/or local government including prefecture and city, Tohoku University possibly will reexamine the appropriateness of the period and the degree of measures. Thus, please refer to the Tohoku University website and pay attention to the information as updated.

10) For students and staff of the university, please reaffirm the network for the information provision in the case of cancellation of the classes or temporary school closing.

11) Since domestic infection has been spreading, the university recommends stockpiling food for a week.

2 About Future Measures

1) The university will improve a system of counseling and responses at Health Administration Center

2) An inquiry counter at night will move to Aoba public health center because the number of inquiries has been small, and how to deal with Influenza A (H1N1) is in the same way as seasonal influenza. People who visit Aoba public health center at night or on holidays, they require to report to Health Administration Center.

3) The university dose not prohibit traveling to patient detected areas in Japan or overseas, or not request returnees to stay at home. However, returnees from patient detected areas require the health-check for 7 days, and to report to Department Head. Preventive measures are still needed such as avoiding crowds, washing your hands, wearing a mask, and Cough Etiquette.

4) Headquarters of crisis measures for Influenza A (H1N1) will consider countermeasures when H1N1 mutates into highly virulent.

3 MISC

1) The university continues to recommend placing alcohol for disinfection to prevent infection in each department because of concerns for possible pandemic in Japan. Faculty members who contact general public require storing highly filterable masks.
