Elucidation of Deformation Mechanism of Iron Base Shape-memory Alloy - Achievement using SPring-8 -
A research group led by Professor Shigeru Suzuki at Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University (Director Professor Fumio Saito) has elucidated the deformation mechanism in iron base shape-memory alloys (Fe-Mn-Si alloys.) The alloys deserve attention as they do not contain rare metals. In this study, the research group has utilized X-ray diffraction (XRD) in JASRI SPring-8 for clarifying structural changes (atomic-arrangement changes) with deformation and heating in alloys. This research has been conducted in collaboration with AWAJI MATERIA CO., LTD, Tokyo (a material manufacturer.) These results are expected to progress applications and development of environment-friendly iron shape-memory alloys.
The research results have been presented as a model for industrial use of SPring-8 at a meeting of Committee for Promotion, Research and Development of JASRI SPring-8, Tokyo on August 3, 2009.
