2009 Second prize of the Gttfried Wagener prize, German Innovation Award

 Assistant Professor Takafumi Fukushima at Graduate School of Engineering has received 2009 Second prize of the Gttfried Wagener prize. The presentation ceremony of German Innovation Award was held at Grand Hyatt Tokyo on February 8, 2010.

 

 The prize was established to commemorate Gottfried Wagener, a German scientist who had close ties with Japan, by 12 German companies that emphasize on technologies and the German Chamber of Commerce in Japan. The award aims to support talented young researchers in Japan and to promote industry-academia collaborations between Germany and Japan.


 Tohoku University has held a briefing session about application in June, 2009 in collaboration with the office of the award to encourage young researchers to participate. There were 63 candidates from universities and research institute through the country when application closed in October, 2009. A selection committee has chosen 4 winners in the three stages, First prize, Second prize and two Third prizes.


 A research group led by Associate Professor Akira Yoshikawa at Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials received the Second Prize of the Gottfried Wagener Prize in 2008, which has helped promote industry-academia collaborations with German businesses. The achievement of this year is expected to give an opportunity to build a closer partnership between Germany and Japan.
