Professor Masataka Nakazawa at Research Institute of Electrical Communication, Tohoku University has received 2010 Medal with Purple Ribbon in academic researches, art, culture and sports on April 29, 2010.

　The reason to be awarded is the development of technologies to promote high-speed and large-capacity optical communications, and contribution to global information and communications networks. Professor Nakazawa has developed Erbium-Doped Optical Fiber Amplifier (EDFA).
