A New Treatment for Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis

Hydrogen-containing Dialysis Water produced by Water Electrolysis, and the Clinical Trial

[Summary]

A research group led by Associate Professor Masaaki Nakayama, Professor Sadayoshi Ito at Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and Nihon Trim Co., Ltd. has successfully developed a hemodialysis system using water electrolysis to safely produce hydrogen-containing dialysis water in large volumes. The clinical trial shows improvements including in high blood pressure, inflammation and reduction in oxidative stresses.

The research results have been published online in Nephroloy Dialysis Transplantation published by European Renal Association - European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) on April 12, 2010. The paper’s title is “A novel bioactive haemodialysis system using dissolved dihydrogen (H2) produced by water electrolysis: a clinical trial.” The research has been conducted as an industry-university joint research.
