Magnetic Shape-Memory Effect Unveiled - Bright Outlook for High-Performance Actuators -

 A research group has first elucidated the mechanism of structural phase transitions in ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys by the combination of hard-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in SPring-8 and a theoretical approach based on a first-principles calculation. The achievement is expected to provide valuable guidelines for materials design of next-generation actuators based on ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys. The principal investigators of the group are Associate Professor Akio Kimura, Mao Ye, Doctoral student, at Graduate School of Science, Hiroshima University, Professor Masafumi Shirai, Assistant Professor Yoshio Miura at Research Institute of Electrical Communication, Tohoku University, Keisuke Kobayashi, Beamline Station Leader, Shigenori Ueda, Researcher, at National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS); Professor Ryosuke Kainuma at Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials (Graduate School of Engineering at present), Tohoku University and Professor Takeshi Kanomata at Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku Gakuin University.
