Microsoft Research Japan Information Science Research Award

Associate Professor Eijirou Sumii at Graduate School of Information Sciences, Tohoku University received Microsoft Research Japan Information Science Research Award.

Mr. Sumii has been conducting outstanding researches on basic theories of program languages and calculation models.  One of notable achievements is the establishment of an elementary and strong theory of environmental bisimilarity to prove program equivalence in various languages.

Mr. Sumii generalized and expanded a concept of Milner’s bisimilarity that is an advanced research result with original ideas, which led to the first successful characterization of program equivalence in real program languages.  His advanced research results have been presented at the top-level international conferences, and their effectiveness are highly praised.  The related studies have been conducted by various researchers.

Mr. Sumii’s collaboration with the bioinformatics field is expected to expand and application of the results.  These achievements are worthy of the prize.
