Proposal of cooling system of the nuclear reactor without external power

Professor Shigenao Maruyama at Institute of Fluid Science, Tohoku University has proposed a cooling system of the nuclear reactor without external power. This system not only automatically cools nuclear reactor even if external power supply has lost, but also keeps on cooling it for over ten years and stops automatically.

The system is consist of an earthquake-proof air cooling tower, steam turbines that generate electric power and pumping power from decay heat of the reactor, and some other equipment. Even if turbines have stopped because of reactor shutdown for long hours, the thermo-siphon can keep on cooling reactor core. In addition, this system can be attached to existing reactors. This system is likely to be essential for multiple safety assurance of nuclear reactor.
