Liquid Li ultrasonic cavitation accelerates fusion reaction

A research group of Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University has discovered that deuteron bombardment on liquid metal Li exposed to ultrasonic waves greatly accelerates D-D fusion reaction. They have revealed that this acceleration is caused by high-temperature (around 7 million degrees Celsius) deuterium plasma generated in liquid metal Li by ultrasonic cavitation. This achievement shows the direct evidence of high-temperature plasma generation by ultrasonic cavitation, and it will open possibilities for plasma fusion research by desk-size experiments. The research result has been published in Physical Review C on May 24, 2012. The paper's title is "Acceleration of the d+d reaction in metal lithium acoustic cavitation with deuteron bombardment from 30 to 70 keV."
