Marked increase in cardiovascular diseases after the Great East Japan Earthquake

A research group led by Professor Hiroaki Shimokawa of Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine has demonstrated a marked increase in the occurrences of cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The results of the study show the need for preventative medical management measures, not only with pulmonary thromboembolism as previously suggested, but with all types of cardiovascular diseases. The results of the research was presented by Professor Shimokawa at the world's largest medical congress, European Society of Cardiology Congress 2012 in Munich, Germany (August 25-29), as one of the most important topics during the Hotline Session (August 28) along with a concurrent research thesis published on the online edition of European Heart Journal. The paper's title is "The Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster and Cardiovascular Diseases."
