Successful enhancement of the mechanical properties of nanocrystalline boron carbide ceramics: Conventional knowledge overturned by nanoporosity and weak interfacial phases

The research group led by Professor and Chief Researcher Mingwei Chen of the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR), Tohoku University, established the mechanical property improvements in nanocrystalline boron carbide ceramics by the introduction of nanoporosity and interfacial phases which was said to be the cause of brittleness in dense micro-grained ceramics.

The research results have been published September 14th on the online edition of Nature Communications. The paper's title is "Enhanced mechanical properties of nanocrystalline boron carbide by nanoporosity and interface phases".
