Shigeru Oda, Professor Emeritus Tohoku University will be awarded the 2012 Order of Culture.

 

Doctor Shigeru Oda served as a Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor in the School of Law with International Law as his area of expertise during his distinguished tenure at Tohoku University from 1950 to 1985. While engaged in education and research, he also served as an adviser and a representative for the Japanese Government at various international and academic conferences.

 

In addition from 1975 to 2003, he served as a judge on the International Court of Justice for an unprecedented 3 terms for a total of 27 years. During his term, he adjudicated on a number of resolutions to international cases and greatly contributed to resolving international conflicts.
