The 8th APRU Research Symposium on Multi-hazards around the Pacific Rim Held at Tohoku University

From September 20 – 22, 2012, the International Research Institute for Disaster Science, which was newly established in April, hosted the 8th APRU Research Symposium on Multi-hazards around the Pacific Rim at Tohoku University.

Under the theme "Towards Disaster-Resilient Societies: The Role of Universities in Reducing Risks of Catastrophic Natural Disasters" many participants from inside and outside Japan including the Secretary General of APRU Dr. Christopher Tremewan attended and thereby created a golden opportunity for the establishment of a network in the field of multi-hazards. Starting with this symposium, Tohoku University will make further contributions through the APRU network with a focus on the field of multi-hazards.

APRU (Association of Pacific Rim Universities)

-The Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) was established in 1997 with the aim of fostering cooperation in education, research and enterprise thereby contributing to the economic, scientific and cultural advancement in the Pacific Rim. APRU has grown rapidly to become a reputable international organization of premier research universities in the Pacific Rim. APRU is now composed of 42 universities.

-Tohoku University joined APRU in 2008. APRU organizes student-centric activities, research –centric activities, and human capital development activities. APRU holds annual meetings for presidents and senior staff of the APRU member universities to discuss and plan APRU’s future activities.
