Microscopic Sandwich: Success in fabricating graphene intercalation compound

The research group consisting of Assistant Professor Katsuaki Sugawara, Associate Professor Tarou Hitosugi, and Professor Takashi Takahashi of the Advanced Institute for Material Research Tohoku University has succeeded for the first time in inserting calcium (Ca) atoms between two adjacent graphite layers like a sandwich, called Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene. The present results would open a way to graphene-based highly efficient micro-batteries and ultrathin superconducting devices, making a great contribution to the research and development of materials science.

The research results were published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (USA) in the week of November 5, 2012 (US Time).
