Major Research Projects

  • World Premier International Research Center (WPI)
    One of the five centers established by MEXT's World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI). The WPI Advanced Institute for Materials Research (WPIAIMR) was established in October 2007.
  • Global COE Program and the 21st COE Program
    Research centers for the Global COE and 21st Century COE programs.
  • Education Programs
    Innovative educational programs proposed by each department.
  • Endowed Chairs and Research Divisions
    Endowed chairs and research divisions were established to facilitate and enhance research and education at Tohoku University through contributions from businesses and other entities. Endowed chairs were organized at the graduate school and endowed research divisions were organized at the research institutes.
  • Industry-University-Government Cooperation Policy
    Tohoku University believes that with regards to Industry-University-Government cooperation, it is of primary importance to deliver the benefits of knowledge to society, and works actively to do so.

Campus

  • Access MAP
    Tohoku University has 5 campuses in Sendai City.
  • Katahira Campus
    Katahira Campus is located in the center of Sendai City. It was the birthplace of Tohoku University, which was built as Tohoku Imperial University in 1907. The Administration Office, and some outstanding international research institutes, such as the Institute for Materials Research, and Research Institute of Electrical Communication, were built on this campus.
  • Kawauchi Campus
    Kawauchi campus is located on the former site of Aoba Castle. The University Library, Sendai Art museum, Sendai City Museum and Sendai International Center are located on or near this campus. 1st and 2nd year students have lectures mainly at Kawauchi Kita Campus, while 3rd and 4th year Arts students and Graduate School students use Kawauchi Minami Campus.
  • Aobayama Campus
    Aobayama Campus is located several kilometers from the center of Sendai City and is surrounded by a rich natural environment. The Faculties of Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering, and their associated Institutes, are located on this campus. 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students and graduate students use this campus to study and research.
  • Seiryo Campus
    Seiryo campus is the center of healthcare for the region. The Tohoku University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine and Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer are located here. 2nd through 6th year undergraduate students and graduate students study and research at this campus. Ichiban-cho, the biggest shopping district in the Tohoku region, is a 15-minute walk from this campus.
  • Amamiya Campus
    Amamiya Campus is located 20-minutes by foot from Seiryo Campus. 3rd and 4th year undergraduate agriculture students study at this campus. Although the name "Faculty of Agriculture" may call to mind images of the countryside, this campus is located near the center of the city and is easily accessible.
