Exhibition to Showcase Important Japanese Historical Documents with English Translations

Tohoku University Library is hosting a special exhibition featuring two important sets of premodern Japanese historical documents: the Ruijū Sandaikyaku and the Documents of Hōzawa. The exhibition showcases the latest research on these collections and, for the first time, English translations of the materials.

Compiled in the 11th century, the Ruijū Sandaikyaku is a cornerstone for studying Japan's ancient legal system. The version preserved in the Kano Collection of Tohoku University Library includes unique sections not found in other copies, offering fresh insights into classical-era society.

The Documents of Hōzawa, preserved in Tohoku University's Department of Japanese History, provide a window into the medieval period through the records of a local warrior house in Sendai.

Both collections were recently designated important cultural properties. Miyagi Prefecture recognized the Ruijū Sandaikyaku in 2024, while Sendai City granted the same status to the Documents of Hōzawa this year.

Dates: September 29, - October 5
Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Venue: Tohoku University Main Library 1st floor Multipurpose Room (left of the entrance before the barrier)
