On November 11, a delegation led by Dr. Joel Rosenthal, President of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs (CCEIA), visited Tohoku University and met with university executives, including President Teiji Tominaga.
President Tominaga expressed his profound respect for the CCEIA's dedication to fostering future leaders while addressing global ethical challenges. He noted that the Council's mission deeply resonates with Tohoku University's commitment to solving human societal issues through cutting-edge research, guided by its philosophy of "Practice-oriented Research and Education."
In response, President Rosenthal referenced the spirit of founder Andrew Carnegie's goals--"Education" and "International Cooperation"--and emphasized that "values and ethics matter greatly" in contemporary society. He asserted that the development of cutting-edge technologies, such as AI and bioethics, must be put to work for the benefit of all society, and expressed high expectations for the significant role Tohoku University is poised to play in solving ethical challenges within this complex, changing world.
Following the meeting, the delegation toured the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) and NanoTerasu (the next-generation synchrotron radiation facility).
This visit is expected to pave the way for enhanced collaboration between Tohoku University and the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.
