Tohoku University Launches AI Data Infrastructure Lab with Western Digital Corporation

Tohoku University and Western Digital Corporation (WD) have established a joint research institution that began operations on July 1, 2026, and will continue until June 30, 2029. Officially known as the WD × Tohoku University AI Data Infrastructure Lab, the lab is located within the Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC) on Tohoku University's Katahira Campus.

As AI continues to grow, so does the demand for storing the enormous amounts of data it generates. The new lab brings together Tohoku University's research expertise and WD's experience in data storage to support the future development of AI infrastructure.

Research at the lab will focus on advanced recording materials, device physics, and storage systems engineering to develop next-generation data storage technologies.

"AI is reshaping the world's digital infrastructure, creating unprecedented demand for storage innovation. Meeting that challenge will require breakthroughs in materials science, recording technologies, and engineering that no single organization can achieve alone. By combining Tohoku University's world-class research capabilities with WD's decades of leadership in storage innovation, we're accelerating the technologies and developing the talent that will help define the future of AI infrastructure," said Hisashi Takano, Japan Country Officer, WD.

The lab will also serve as a platform for cultivating the next generation of talent.

"By working closely with Western Digital, we hope to accelerate innovation in data storage technologies while creating an environment where young researchers can develop the knowledge and skills needed to support the future of AI infrastructure," said Kazushi Ishiyama, Director of RIEC at Tohoku University.

The new lab is expected to become a hub for collaborative research, offering new opportunities to strengthen academia-industry collaboration and advance innovation in data storage technologies.
