23rd President: Teiji Tominaga

Teiji Tominaga's history with Tohoku University spans four decades and he brings to the office a wealth of experience in medicine, research and administration.

An alumnus of the Tohoku University School of Medicine, Tominaga has held significant positions at the medical school including professor of neurology at the Graduate School of Medicine's Department of Neuroscience and Sensory Organs, and deputy director at the Clinical Research Innovation and Education Center.

From 2019 - 23, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tominaga led Tohoku University Hospital as director, and headed the Miyagi prefectural government's Medical Coordination Headquarters.

The 66-year-old Fukushima native spent a year as Tohoku University's Executive Vice President for Co-creation Strategy, Disaster Reconstruction and Regeneration, and has spoken often about the need for stronger reconstruction efforts in the region's disaster-stricken areas and working towards the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

In addition to his academic and clinical achievements, Tominaga has played pivotal leadership roles in various professional societies and has also received multiple awards from the government and the Japan Neurosurgical Society.
