The abstract of an academic paper is perhaps the most important part of the academic writing process. It is distributed more widely than the actual academic text itself and many people decide whether or not they will read the paper based on the abstract and its keywords. Therefore it is important to have a representative abstract that clearly illustrates the main points of the paper. All academic papers require an abstract and even papers in Japanese require abstracts in English. This workshop will take a practical approach to academic abstract writing and participants will be shown how to write an academic abstract through an 8-step process. The workshop will be of interest to both English teachers who are keen to teach about the academic writing process within their classes and to faculty or graduate students who need to write abstracts in English for their academic papers.
