本日ここに、晴れて学士の学位を授与された49名の皆さん、修士の学位を授与された147名の皆さん、専門職の学位を授与された18名の皆さん、そして博士の学位を授与された144名の皆さん、おめでとうございます。東北大学を代表して、心よりお祝いを申し上げます。
　また、この間、皆さんが晴れて本日を迎えることを心待ちにし、支援をしてくださったご両親、ご家族、関係者の皆様に、心よりお慶びを申し上げます。
　皆さんは、日本を含め世界40カ国から、各自さまざまな目的をもって本学の門を叩かれました。ここに、国際色豊かで、多彩なバックグラウンドをもつ皆さんを本学から送り出すことができて、私たちもたいへん嬉しく思います。

東北大学は、今から111年前の1907年の建学以来、「杜の都」あるいは「学都」と呼ばれる仙台の地にあって、「研究第一」、「門戸開放」、「実学尊重」の理念のもとに、多くの指導的人材を輩出し、イノベーションを駆動する世界的研究成果を挙げてきました。
昨年6月には、世界の有力大学と伍していくことを使命とする「指定国立大学法人」の最初の三校に選ばれました。これも、111年に及ぶ活動に裏打ちされてこそ、実現したものです。

さて、皆さんの多くにとっては、入学される前のことであったかもしれませんが、7年前に発生した東日本大震災は、私たちにとって忘れられない出来事であります。今なお避難を強いられている方も多数おられます。また、今年になってからも、大阪府北部地震、西日本豪雨、台風21号や北海道胆振東部（いぶりとうぶ）地震と災害が続いています。もちろん、災害は我が国だけのことではありません。
　その東日本大震災を受けて、本学では、直後から構成員が地域に貢献するべく自発的に100以上のプロジェクトを立ち上げました。また、災害復興新生研究機構の下に、災害科学国際研究所や東北メディカル・メガバンク機構に代表される組織を設立し、社会とともに防災減災の科学と技術を進展させてきました。例えば、災害科学研究においては、スーパーコンピュータによるリアルタイム津波浸水被害予測システムの実用化がなされました。また、東北メディカル・メガバンク機構は、バイオバンクにより「個別化医療」と「個別化予防」に基づく未来型医療を、被災地をはじめとする地域に提供するべく活動を積み重ねています。このように、震災を契機に始まった活動の成果が、これから国内外に普及していく時期を迎えています。あの大震災は、社会における大学の役割をあらためて強く意識させるものであったといえます。社会が災害などの課題に直面した時、総合研究大学の多様な知と人材の果たす役割はきわめて大きなものがあると改めて私たちは胸に刻んだのです。
　この思いは、「持続可能な社会の実現」に向けた組織的な取組、すなわち私たちが「社会にインパクトある研究」と呼んでいる取組へとつながりました。今後、これをさらに発展させ、新たな社会連携の活動として推進していきます。結果的に本学は、国連で採択された「持続可能な開発目標（SDGｓ:Sustainable Development Goals）」の達成に向けて、先進的に取り組む大学となっているのです。

ところで皆さんは、東北大学で何を学んだと感じておられるでしょうか。
　本学は、伝統的にイノベーションを駆動する世界的研究成果を挙げてきました。また、震災を経て社会が直面する課題に正面から取り組み、その解決に向けて歩みを進めてきました。これらの成果や取組が、私たちに「社会とともにある大学」という新たなアイデンティティを与えることとなり、自分では気がつかなくとも、知らず知らずのうちに、皆さんの中にもこのアイデンティティが息づいていると確信しています。
　ここでもう一度、本学の「研究第一」の伝統を思い起こしてください。これは研究のための理念であるとともに、教育のための理念でもあるのです。ものごとの本質に迫る研究の実践を通してこそ、一流の学び、すなわち教育となります。分野に関わらず、そのような教育が皆さんの中に根づいているはずです。
　自らの課題を徹底的に考え抜き、情熱をもって行動し、先頭に立って道を切り拓くこと、そのようにして本気で未知に挑むことは、それが基礎分野であれ、応用分野であれ、結果的に人類社会の未来に貢献するものです。

皆さんがこれから直面する社会は、大きな変革期を迎えています。
　グローバリゼーションの一層の進展、第四次産業革命の進行、なかでも人工知能（AI）やIoT（Internet of Things）の普及により、多くの人が、社会の仕組みが根本から変わると考えています。さらには、仮想空間と現実空間を高度に融合させたシステムにより、経済発展と社会的課題の解決を両立する、人間中心の社会を創り出していく動きがあります。
　これに加えて、世界各地には、反知性主義（Anti-intellectualism）やポピュリズムが台頭しており、私たちの未来を一層複雑にしています。広い意味の災害は、もちろん私たち人間が引き起こしてしまうこともあるのです。
　このように複雑で錯綜した変革の社会、そして課題があふれる社会に出ていくことは、まさに「海図のない海」へ舟を漕ぎ出していくようなものです。皆さんには、その中で、本学で身に付けた「自ら考え行動し道を切り拓く力」の真価を発揮してほしいと願っています。皆さんが学び身に着けた力は、必ずや皆さんの前に活路を開き、難局を克服する道筋を示してくれるに違いありません。

これから皆さんは、様々な人々と連携して、新たな社会を創っていくことになります。そこでは、東北大学という多様性のある環境で学んだ経験が、多くの人々との連携を容易にするはずです。是非、対立やジレンマを克服して、よりよい未来を世界中の仲間と創っていってください。

仲間といえば、本学のコミュニティの一員であることが、皆さんにとって大きな力となるでしょう。本学には、全学同窓会である「東北大学萩友会」のもとに、国内には50を超える同窓会があり、海外にも、ニューヨークやインドネシアなど5か所の同窓会があります。もし同窓会がなければ、皆さん自身で立ち上げてください。本学のネットワークも大いに使って、世界をより良い場所にしていき、皆さん自身も豊かな時間を過ごしてほしいと思います。

そして、その同窓会でまた、皆さんとお会いできる日を、心から楽しみにしております。
　ここに出席されている多くの日本語を母国語としない卒業生、修了生のために、英語でお祝いの言葉を述べます。

As President of Tohoku University, it is my honor to be the first one to applaud your success today.

You are about to step into an ever-changing world, where academic tradition might not seem to be of much importance anymore. However, you should remember, that, despite all anti-intellectualism and populism currently fashionable, it is the academic knowledge and wisdom, the deeper understanding of the world, that forms the fundament of our society.

In times where sustainability is a more important goal than ever, the academic world has also been tasked to provide solutions to urgent matters.
　People rely on the wisdom of the academic world as well as advancements in science and technology.
　And Tohoku University has been part of that evolution of society since its very beginning.

Just as an example, in the last years, we have developed a system to predict and contain damages of tsunamis in real time, established steps for the progress of next-generation medicine and presented many other innovations to help communities both at home and abroad.
　We are, after all, involved in the global community and have the responsibility to support and promote the creation of knowledge.

Gaining deeper insight into the basic mechanisms of the world provides not only a more fundamental understanding of our surroundings, but also means to expand the intellectual horizon and convey wisdom for the benefit of everybody.

Wisdom means to understand the essence, the core of the matter and to have the competency as well as the necessary judgment to utilize important findings for further progress. It means to realize and comprehend current needs, to work together with the community to overcome difficulties and to contribute not only the discoveries and innovations themselves, but also the mindset and character that led to them.

And you, dear graduates, have taken a vital role in this process.
　Cutting-edge research always goes hand in hand with the education of brilliant talent and leaders. Without the new ideas of people who see the world from a different angle, without the fusion of inspirations from diverse academic literates, the essence of our studies will be lost.
　So I have to thank you for your participation and compliment you on your achievements.

When you open a new chapter of your life today and start your career as an international, sophisticated citizen of the global world, you might be confronted with challenges you did not expect or imagine. Challenges, that might seem impossible to overcome.
　But I am certain, that your experience from your time here at Tohoku University will help you and provide necessary guidance to manage any situation appropriately and accordingly.

And please remember: Today is not the end of this bond we have formed over the past years.
　Today marks the beginning of a new collaboration between equals.

As you probably heard many times, we do have the tradition of "Open Door" since our very beginning. To this end, our alumni association 'Shuyukai' has created a global community of Tohoku University graduates to keep in touch, let you know about recent developments of your alma mater and - most importantly - help each other as friends and family.
　You are always welcome, and you will always be appreciated.

Congratulations on your graduation and all the best for your future.
