Tohoku University DEI Symposium 2024: Gendered Innovations Paving the Way for DEI

In 1913, embracing its founding principle of having "Open Doors," Tohoku University admitted three female students. That decision broke the gender barrier in Japanese academia and marked the first time in the country's history that female students were accepted into a national university.

Since then, the university has continued to embrace inclusion and celebrate diversity, taking on initiatives that promote gender equality and provide support for female researchers. The university's 2022 DEI Promotion Declaration further accelerates its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment.

Giving the keynote speech at this year's Tohoku University DEI Symposium is Londa Schiebinger, a pioneer in "Gendered Innovations," which integrates sex and gender perspectives into research to unlock discoveries and innovations.

This on-site / online hybrid event will be in both English and Japanese. Simultaneous translation will be provided, so everyone is welcome.

About the Keynote Speaker:

Londa Schiebinger is the John L. Hinds Professor of History of Science at Stanford University, and the Director of the EU/US Gendered Innovations in Science, Health and Medicine, Engineering and Environment Project.

She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1984 and is a leading international authority on gender in science and technology. Over the past thirty years, Schiebinger's work has been devoted to teasing apart three analytically distinct but interlocking pieces of the gender and science puzzle: the history of women's participation in science; gender in the structure of scientific institutions; and the gendering of human knowledge.
