The Tohoku University Japanese Program (TUJP) is usually a popular summer exchange, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 program has been moved online.
Nonetheless, participants will still receive dynamic Japanese language lessons, interactive cultural activities and a chance to learn alongside local Tohoku University students - all from the safety of their own home.
From May to July, there will be three programs on offer, each lasting 2 - 4 weeks. Interested participants can choose from one of the following:
TUJP Online 1
Japanese Communication Program for Basic Learners
Duration: 2 weeks
Date: May 10 - 21, 2021
Time: 8:50 a.m. - 12 noon (JST)
Application deadline: March 31, 2021 (JST) (Closed)
TUJP Online 2
Academic Japanese Program for Pre-intermediate and Intermediate Learners
Duration: 3 weeks
Date: May 27 - June 16, 2021
Time: 4:20 - 7:30 p.m. (JST)
Application deadline: April 15, 2021 (JST) (Closed)
TUJP Online 3
Intensive Japanese Communication Program for Basic Learners
Duration: 4 weeks
Date: June 21 - July 16, 2021
Time: 8:50 a.m. - 12 noon (JST)
Application deadline: May 12, 2021 (JST)
There are a couple of new added options this year:
- For the first time, the programs will be open to students from non-partner universities. So anyone who is officially enrolled in a university outside Japan can apply directly.
- Overseas universities can also request customized programs.
To be eligible, applicants should:
- be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student
- have strong English language proficiency (a level equivalent to TOEFL® iBT 70 or PBT 520 is recommended for non native English speakers)
- have some Japanese language proficiency ( TUJP Online-1 & 3: Beginners / TUJP Online-2: Pre-intermediate or Intermediate)
