A Taste of Tohoku University History: Hinshoku Curry

Nostalgia is running high in the lead-up to Homecoming weekend.

From today, Co-op on all Tohoku University campuses will be selling boxes of Hinshoku Curry. It features the same recipe as the pork curry served at the infamous Daini (second) Cafeteria at Kawauchi Campus from 1967 - 2008.

"When I was a student in the '70s, the Daini Cafeteria was new but it was in a building that looked really old and had the nickname Hinmin Shokudo (cafeteria for the poor)," said Nobuyoshi Hara, executive vice president for community outreach. "They had a variety of curries, but the original flavour, which had pork and a lot of onions, was the most popular. So that's what we have decided to bring back."

Many alumni remember the curry dish fondly as literally a poor man's lunch as it was cheap, filling and very tasty - qualities that frankly, still sound good today.

A box of Hinshoku Curry costs 378 yen, and some of the proceeds will go towards the Tohoku University Fund.
