Recruitment Notice: Associate Professor

The Graduate School of Arts and Letters at Tohoku University is recruiting for the following position.

Position

Title: Associate Professor
Affiliation: Graduate School of Arts and Letters, Global Humanities (Department of European and American History)
Term of Employment: Tenured/Non-tenured (5-year contract, depending on the research achievements and teaching experience, may be hired as tenure-track associate professor)
Location: Graduate School of Arts and Letters, Kawauchi-Minami Campus, 27-1 Kawauchi, Aoba-ku, Sendai, Miyagi 980-8576
Start Date: April 1st, 2026

Job Description

Successful candidates will be engaged in research and education related to European and American history.

Some of the main areas that the successful candidate will be responsible for (in Japanese) are as follows:

Graduate School level:

  • History of Ancient and Medieval Europe (Advanced Lecture)
  • History of Ancient and Medieval Europe (Advanced Seminar)

Undergraduate level

  • History of European and American History (General Lecture)
  • History of European and American History (Special Lecture)
  • History of European and American History (Introductory Reading)
  • History of American History (Seminar)

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.)
  • Specialized in ancient European history or medieval/early modern European history
  • Can provide teaching and research guidance using Latin and French texts
  • Ability to teach classes, supervise students and conduct university duties in Japanese

    It must include the following:

    2. Educational background from high school graduation to the highest academic degree obtained, including the start and end date (month and year).
    3. Employment history, including the year and month of the start and end of each employment.
  2. Complete list of academic publications and other research activities.
    Please list books, articles, and book reviews and other shorter materials separately.
  3. Three major research achievements, such as books, published papers, etc.
    Include a summary or abstract for each research achievement in Japanese (400 characters).
  4. Statement of research activity and a concise summary of the candidate's perspective on education and research in related subjects (2,000 characters in Japanese in A4 sized paper).
