Exec. Vice President Ueki attends Association of East Asian Research Universities' Meeting

On October 30, Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki attended the Association of East Asian Research Universities' (AEARU) 25th Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at Yonsei University in South Korea.

At the AGM, presidents and vice presidents of the association's member universities gather to evaluate activities and share ideas on science and technology. This year, approximately 50 presidents and vice presidents attended.

Tohoku University, along with Osaka University, was elected to the association's Board of Directors to represent Japanese universities. The two-year term begins in January and will see the two universities become involved in making important decisions.

On this occasion, EVP Ueki presented a report on the APRU-AEARU Multi-Hazards Summer School held in July this year.

Later that afternoon, EVP Ueki attended the GEEF (The Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development). The GEEF is an annual, Yonsei University organized forum to promote cooperation to help achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year, in collaboration with AEARU, the forum examined the role that higher education should play in achieving the SDGs and in nurturing the next generation.

Distinguished Professor and Emeritus Director of the Institute for Global Engagement at Yonsei University, Ban Ki-moon (former UN Secretary-General), gave a keynote speech and urged attendees to cooperate in fully implementing inclusive, equitable, and high quality education as promoted in the SDGs. In addition, representatives from each participating organization, including EVP Ueki, signed a joint statement verifying their cooperation in creating a sustainable future.

Through these events, EVP Ueki deepened his ties with the presidents of universities leading research and education in East Asia, and he strengthened the trusting relationship Tohoku University maintains with fellow association members.

The next AGM takes place in November 2020 at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
