Charles University Vice-Rector Visits Tohoku University

On July 30, Charles University (Czech Republic) Vice-Rector Professor Markéta Martínková visited Tohoku University and met with Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki. Martínková spent time at Tohoku University's Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials (IMRAM) from 2004 to 2006 as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) postdoctoral research fellow. During this recent visit, she was accompanied by Professor Emeritus Toru Shimizu, who was her supervising professor at that time.

During their meeting, Martínková presented an overview of Charles University to Ueki, who conveyed his hopes for future collaboration between the two universities. The vice-rector also visited Tohoku University Hospital, the Graduate School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Graduate School of Science, where she had additional meetings.

During each meeting, the members introduced their respective universities and departments while discussing potential collaborative opportunities for the future. Another topic, which came up during the meetings at the Graduate School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, was the differences between the educational systems of the two institutions. At the Graduate School of Science, which has a department-level agreement with Charles University's Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, participants also discussed developing a specialized student exchange program and joint degree offerings to strengthen academic ties.

This visit is expected to contribute to strengthening collaboration between the two universities.
