A delegation from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Sendai and from the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs - including its Ambassador for Public Diplomacy Park Enna - visited Tohoku University on April 16, and paid a courtesy visit to President Hideo Ohno.

President Ohno thanked his guests for the tremendous support received from the Republic of Korea after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, adding that the university would like to return the show of support by encouraging more academic exchanges between Japan and Korea.

He also spoke of the work that Tohoku University is doing in the field of disaster science and his hope that it will lead to a greater public awareness and understanding of disaster risk management.

Also at the meeting were Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki, Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi, Professor Jeongsoo Yu of the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Associate Professor Lee Inja of the Graduate School of Education and Associate Professor Kim Hyeoncheol of the Institute for Excellence in Higher Education.

Before leaving campus, the delegation visited the Tohoku University Archives, and were treated to an exhibition of materials on the Korean poet and critic Kim Kirim, who had studied at Tohoku University in the 1930s.
