Daikon genome sequence determined

Researchers Professor Takeshi Nishio and Associate Professor Hiroyasu Kitashiba, in cooperation with the Kazusa DNA Research Institute, have determined the whole genome sequence of the daikon.

The result of the research provides valuable information for identifying genes responsible for the traits important in cultivars, e.g. genes that influence root shape and odour. The daikon or winter radish is predominately grown in Asia. Understanding the genetics of plants allows agriculturalists to develop crops with increased productivity, drought tolerance and pest and disease resistance.
