COVID-19 PREVENTION: Planning for April

The following are a few important announcements from Tohoku University, reminding everyone to stay safe this weekend, and to consider how our actions can affect people who are more vulnerable.

Hanami Parties Not Allowed on Campus

It's that time of year again when we celebrate spring and enjoy the cherry blossoms. Katahira campus, in particular, is usually a popular spot for hanami parties.

But as we are urging everyone to avoid socializing in large groups where there is close physical contact, hanami parties will not be allowed on campus this year.

Feel free to walk through, but please do not plan any activities or gatherings.

Reconsider Volunteer Activities

Tohoku University has a great tradition of volunteerism and social outreach. But the university's Extracurricular / Volunteer Activities Support Center has put out a notice (PDF), asking that students who are not feeling well, who have an underlying illness, who have travelled recently or who might have come into contact with someone who is unwell, to please temporarily refrain from volunteer activities.

This is because the coronavirus is extremely contagious and many volunteer activities involve engagement with vulnerable groups such as the infirmed, young children and the elderly.

Domestic Travel Restrictions

The university stopped all international trips earlier this month, and has now also banned business travel within Japan.

Tokyo in particular, has seen a sharp rise in infection cases recently, and students and staff are strongly urged not to make any unnecessary trips there, even in a private capacity. Recreational travel to other parts of Japan is also strongly discouraged.

Strict measures are in place not just to protect staff and students, but the entire community in Sendai. Tohoku University asks for your understanding.
