Announcement: Financial Aid for Students

Tohoku University understands the importance of the income that students get from part-time work, but asks that they be prudent about the kind of work they engage in. As the novel coronavirus is extremely contagious, students should avoid jobs in poorly ventilated places like restaurants and bars, as well as those that require close physical contact such as tutoring.

To support students who might lose vital income because they cannot find safe part-time work, the university has a range of need-based financial aid and scholarships that they can apply for.

Scholarships

For Japanese students, application for the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarship for undergraduates, and the loan scholarship for undergraduates and graduates, begins in April.

The contact for inquiries for JASSO depends on the applicant's school year:

- Undergraduate Students (3rd Year and above):
Faculty/Department Office of Educational Affairs
- Undergraduate Students (1st and 2nd Year):
Education and Student Support Department, Student Services Division, Financial Support Section

Non-Japanese students should refer to page 39 of the 2020-2021 Handbook for International Students for a list of scholarships that they might be eligible for.

Tuition Fees

Students can also ask the Education and Student Support Department about alternative ways to pay their tuition fees, such as deferment, using an installment plan or a change of payment method.

These options are available to all students - domestic and international.
