Message from President Hideo Ohno - May 18, 2020

Dear students, faculty and staff,

As the government has lifted the state of emergency for Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku University is resetting its BCP level down to 3, but with a few minor adjustments to reflect the continued seriousness of our current situation.

Until the global pandemic is over and the threat of coronavirus infection passes, all university activities - at every level - must be conducted with rigorous preventive measures in place. In this new normal, we must always be aware of how our actions affect the people around us.

Despite the constraints to your daily life, I encourage you to stay positive and to find different ways to be active and productive while staying safe. Tohoku University is committed to providing thorough support for your education, including online classes, peer support and financial aid through our emergency student support packages.

Regardless of the external environment, the mission of Tohoku University, as a leading research university in Japan, remains the same: to offer the highest level of education, to develop research and co-creation with industry, and through the power of knowledge, to provide solutions to the world's most pressing problems. As such, we are heavily involved in the global search for a cure for COVID-19.

Going forward, Tohoku University will continue to evolve by expanding our activities into cyberspace. Classes, research and development, international collaborations, entrance examinations, co-creation with society, and even general business operations conducted online, will open new opportunities that have never been seen before. By merging real and virtual spaces, we hope to create a university that is borderless, diverse and inclusive, with no limit to what we can achieve.

In the Tohoku University Vision 2030, I outlined the concept of "Collaborate, Innovate, Activate." Without compromising our efforts to be safe and socially responsible, let's take the opportunity of this extraordinary situation to also initiate. We stand at the beginning of change and there's a lot to be excited about.

President, Tohoku University
