Highlighting technologies for disaster mitigation

On the seventh anniversary of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, the Japanese government has published a special edition of its monthly magazine to highlight some of the innovative - and traditional - ideas and technologies being introduced in Japan to mitigate disasters.

Many of these methods are also being adopted overseas and include an early earthquake warning system, quick-build temporary housing and low-cost retro-fit construction of earthquake-resilient floors.

The feature includes an interview with world-leading expert in tsunami engineering and director of Tohoku University's International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Professor Fumihiko Imamura.
