In Times Higher Education's annual Japan University Rankings, Tohoku University remains at number one for the second year in a row, even improving on last year's performance in some categories.
Times Higher Education (THE), which compiles performance data on top institutions around the world, once again highlighted Tohoku University's emphasis on global education, and cited the growing number of international faculty, students and research collaborations, as factors in their decision.
The 16 metrics used to determine the rankings include teaching and learning environment, international outlook of staff and students, research citation and influence, and industry income.
THE also considered what it describes as "engagement measures," such as student engagement, interaction between teachers and students, and how well employers view graduating students.
Tohoku University has consistently placed in the top three of THE's Japan University Rankings. This year, Tokyo Institute of Technology and the University of Tokyo are ranked number two and three respectively.
