COVID-19: Wastewater-based Epidemiology Webinar

The importance of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has recently gained global attention, since scientific reports indicated that the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is proportional to the number of COVID-19 patients in a sewershed.

Detection of pathogenic viruses has been extensively applied over decades by members of the International Water Association's Health-Related Water Microbiology (HRWM) specialist group.

In this webinar, updated information about wastewater-based epidemiology for SARS-CoV-2 and other important viral water pathogens - including poliovirus, Hepatitis E virus, adenovirus and norovirus - will be introduced.

The potential of WBE to be installed as an early disease warning system in public health will also be discussed.

Programme and Speakers:

Prof. John Scott Meschke, University of Washington, USA
Title: Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, lessons from the Poliovirus surveillance experience

Dr. Ana Maria de Roda Husman, RIVM, the Netherlands
Title: Testing virus in urban sewage for molecular epidemiology studies: SARS-CoV-2 and Hepatitis E virus in wastewater

Prof. Veronica Rajal, University of Salta, Argentina
Title: Virus as contaminants in river water impacted by wastewater: enteric viruses and SARS-CoV-2

Assoc. Prof. Daisuke Sano, Tohoku University, Japan
Title: Virus monitoring in sewage for early warning of infectious diseases, Norovirus and SARS-CoV-2

The presentations will be followed by a Q&A and discussion.
