Interconnected crises - including climate change, disasters, pandemics and environmental degradation - are prompting a reconsideration of modern development paradigms. Building on Professor Iveta Silova's call for "Unlearning Development," this symposium will explore disaster culture beyond its conventional emphasis on knowledge transmission, collective memory and resilience, and ask how disasters challenge established assumptions about development.
This event will also examine - through comparative perspectives from the Asia-Pacific region - what people learn, unlearn, and relearn through disasters. It will seek to reconceptualize disaster culture as a cultural and educational process through which development assumptions are questioned and alternative futures imagined.
