On September 25, 2026, a delegation from Technische Universität Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt) in Germany, led by Vice President Thomas Walther, visited Tohoku University and met with Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki and other university representatives.
Executive Vice President Ueki started the meeting by extending a warm welcome to the delegation, noting that this was the first visit from TU Darmstadt since its president led a delegation to Tohoku University in June 2019.
Representatives from both universities gave presentations introducing their institutions and respective research strengths. Tohoku University highlighted its strengths in materials science and spintronics, research initiatives involving the next-generation synchrotron radiation facility NanoTerasu, and its efforts to support early-career researchers and promote industry-university collaboration as part of its role as a University for International Research Excellence.
TU Darmstadt introduced its key research areas, including AI, energy, and materials science, as well as its support for startups and involvement in European university alliances. The two universities also reaffirmed their shared commitment to diversity and internationalization.
Looking ahead, both universities agreed to build on their existing joint research activities by encouraging new connections between researchers in specific fields and promoting educational and student exchanges through short-term programs, such as summer schools.
They also expressed interest in securing additional joint research funding through European grants and expanding collaborations with other universities, particularly in light of Japan's association with Horizon Europe.
Following the meeting, the delegation toured NanoTerasu, the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR), and the Institute of Fluid Science (IFS). During the visits, they learned about Tohoku University's cutting-edge research facilities and initiatives and engaged in lively discussions.
Both universities hope to build on this visit to further strengthen their partnership in research and education.
