Modular AI Robot to be Exhibited at Osaka-Kansai Expo Needs a Nickname

Professor Kazuya Yoshida's research group at Tohoku University's Graduate School of Engineering is seeking nickname submissions for its modular AI robot model that will be exhibited at the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

This robot is being developed as part of the government's Moonshot Research and Development Programme's Goal 3 research project, which focuses on "Self-Evolving AI Robot System for Lunar Exploration and Human Outpost Construction."

Yoshida's team is working on developing modular AI robot systems aimed at realising a "lunar outpost" where ordinary people can live on the moon by 2050.

Rather than sending completed robots to the moon, this system envisions sending basic modules such as arms and wheels to be flexibly configured and assembled on-site. This approach enables the creation of "reconfigurable robots" that can adapt their form according to local conditions. Additionally, the project aims to realise a world where multiple robots autonomously collaborate using AI technology.

The latest model of the modular AI robot under development will be exhibited for a limited time at the "Future Life Experience" section of the Osaka-Kansai Expo from August 6 - 11, 2025.

Ahead of that, Yoshida's team and the School of Engineering are welcoming creative suggestions for names that are both friendly and evoke a sense of the future.

Deadline: July 15, 2025
