An exhibition featuring the various inventions of the late Junichi Nishizawa is on display until the end of the month at the Miyagi Prefectural Government Building.
Professor Nishizawa, known as the father of optical communication and nicknamed "Mr. Semiconductor" for his pioneering work on semiconductor development and optical communications, passed away last year on October 21. He also served as Tohoku University president from 1990 until 1996.
Dr. Nishizawa invented the PIN diode, the static induction transistor, and other groundbreaking devices that won him numerous awards. Over the course of his life, Dr. Nishizawa registered 1,000 patents.
The exhibition will feature a wide array of Dr. Nishizawa's inventions. Displayed items include the pin diode that Nishizawa invented in 1950; high-intensity red light-emitting diodes - something used in car brake lights; a static induction transistor; and an LED traffic light prototype.
The exhibition will also display a collection of Nishizawa's personal items and photos.
