Tohoku University Confirms First Positive Case of COVID-19

On April 5, a male Tohoku University student in his 20s tested positive for the coronavirus.

The student, who is not a Japanese national, contacted the public health center and has been in self-isolation since he developed symptoms on March 31. The university is currently helping him to get medical care.

The university is also trying to determine his exposure on campus, such as the people whom he might have had recent contact with.

According to the student, he had dinner with a group on March 27 that included people who have since tested positive for COVID-19 through the HUB cluster. The following day (March 28) the student had another meal with nine other students. The students involved have all been contacted and isolated, and will be monitoring their own health condition over the next week.

The student has not travelled recently and has not visited his laboratory on campus since March 18, but anyone who thinks they may have been in contact with him should similarly restrict their movements and monitor their health condition this week.

In line with government recommendations, Tohoku University has implemented strict measures to minimize the possibility of infection on campus. These include closing facilities, cancelling events and moving orientation and classes online. The university has also stopped all international and domestic travel, and has issued frequent reminders to students and staff to practice good hygiene and social distancing.

Tohoku University will continue to take precautionary measures and make appropriate information available. In the meantime, it asks that the privacy of the student and his family be respected.
