Second Positive Case of COVID-19 at Tohoku University

A second Tohoku University student has tested positive for the coronavirus.

The female student, who is in her 20s, developed a fever and runny nose on April 3. She contacted the public health center and did a PCR test, which came back positive on April 7. She is currently being treated in hospital.

The student has not travelled recently and has not been on any of the university's four main campuses since March 10.

In line with government recommendations, Tohoku University has implemented strict measures to minimize the possibility of infection on campus. These include creating an Emergency Action Plan, a set of Business Continuity Planning (BCP) guidelines.

On April 8, the university raised its BCP level to 3 (on a 5-tier scale), which requires non-essential staff to work from home, and classes to be conducted online.

Tohoku University will continue to take precautionary measures and make appropriate information available. In the meantime, it asks that the privacy of all affected students and their families be respected.
